We all spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping, so what’s more important than getting a mattress with a supportive base which will contribute to a good night’s sleep?

Firstly, let us understand what types of mattress are there:
Open spring mattress AKA open coil mattress: Machine stitched with numerous long pieces of metal wire coiled into springs with additional wires to maintain shape and structure. Great value for money, light, and easy to move. Downside is that they are less supportive than other mattresses. Best suited for guest rooms or short-termed solution.
Pocket spring mattress: A step higher from open spring mattress. Individual, small springs are housed in their own pocket of fabric which moves independently, providing more support. Different degrees on firmness are available, more breathable and cooler than memory foam or latex mattresses. Downside is that they are heavy to move and might be filled with materials which mightnot be allergen-free. Best suited for couples, as separate springs will cater for your different weights with central body weight support.
Memory foam mattress: These are modern mattresses made from a mouldable material which has and has hypo-allergenic properties. It also responds to body heat and weight, by moulding to the shape of your body and relieve pressure on your joints. Downside is that there’s a sinking motion and a warming sensation which is not welcomed by all. Best suited for those who need back support, as it will maintain posture and align your spine when you turn to your side.
Latex mattress: These are modern mattresses filled breathable material in the name of latex foam, to combat the warming issue while sleeping. Extremely durable and allergen free. Downside is that they can be rather solid at first and difficult to move. Best suited for those who prefer a firmer bed, and those who suffer from allergies.
Secondly, you need to ensure that your newly purchased mattress is well taken care of.
Airing of mattress: Make sure to air your mattress for at least least five hours in order to remove any storage smells of damp or cold. During usage, you can to air your mattress weekly with the bed linen removed.
Mattress protector: A bed linen is not enough. Prolong your mattress’ life with a protector to protect your mattress from any stains or dirt.
Position of mattress: Turn your mattress regularly to prevent dips from forming which leads to uneven sleeping.
Replace your mattress: Replace your mattresses every 8 to 10 years not only for hygiene reasons but because of the declining firmness, which reduces the support of your posture.
